Unfortunately, most conventional cardiologists snub\nor \u201cbelittle\u201d this test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large particles (pattern A) are healthy, while small dense\nparticles (pattern B) are not. You may request a lipoprotein electrophoresis\ntest to determine your particle size, however, it is expensive. Alternatively,\nyou can use a surrogate test, and that\u2019s what this ratio is. This surrogate\ntest will determine your risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Remember<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; it\u2019s not about the LDL, it\u2019s about a ratio. The Triglyceride (TG) to High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) ratio is a very good predictor of coronary heart disease and stroke, NOT Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. In fact, LDL has little to do with overall risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><u>You will need:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Triglycerides levels \u2013 this is the amount of fat in the bloodstream<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; HDL reading<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Here is how you can work out the ratio?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All you do is take the <em>Triglyceride<\/em> and divide by the <em>HDL<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Here is a quick example:<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TG = 120 mg\/dL <br>HDL= 40 mg\/dL<br>120 \/ 40 = 3.0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus: Simply take the Triglyceride and divide by the HDL;\nthe closer to 1, the better<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The above example indicates an elevated risk of heart attack and stroke. In fact, at 3:1 the likelihood of a heart attack goes way up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Low TG:HDL is desirable.<\/strong> <br>Example: TG of 50 mg\/dL and HDL of 80 mg\/dL provides a low TG:HDL ratio of 0.6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>High TG:HDL<\/strong>, especially higher than 3, indicates a significant risk of heart attack and stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the values are in mg\/dl then less than 2 is ideal with 3\nor above being too high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(If your results are in mmol\/L multiply this ratio by 0.4366\nto reach the correct value. Here, your ratio should be less than 0.87 with 1.74\nbeing way too high.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More about Triglycerides:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your triglycerides are under 88.57mg\/dL&nbsp; (1mmol\/L)&nbsp;\n\u2013 Essentially none of the LDL will be in the dangerous small\ndense (sdLDL) region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If over&nbsp; 132.86mg\/dL\n(1.5 mmol\/L) \u2013 then you may have predominantly sdLDL. Which means you are\neating too many carbohydrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can you improve your Triglycerides?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Lose weight especially \u201cbelly fat\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Avoid sugar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. This is why a highly processed (junk food) diet is so dangerous, its high carb, high sugar (meaning high fructose) and these ingredients are a recipe for disaster \u2013 you will have both high triglycerides and low HDL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Eat fewer carbohydrates and follow a Ketogenic Diet. If you follow a Ketogenic Diet you will have slightly higher LDL cholesterol \u2013 this is ideal \u2013 as it is more likely to be the large fluffy particles, not the sdLDL. It\u2019s absolutely safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S.
