How many diets have you been on?

  • Low-fat diets
  • Calorie Counting (till your blue in the face)
  • 6 meals a day diets
  • Pop a “magic pill” & eat all you want diets
  • …or even just exercise yourself out of a bad diet regime

But all of these diets are doomed to fail, because you are stuck with:

  • Gnawing hunger pains
  • Uncontrollable cravings
  • No energy
  • Irritability

Let’s take Olivia for example, she is your average woman, 35 years old, she is overweight and struggling to shed some pounds.

On a typical day this is what Olivia will be eating –

Look at that it’s not a sugar fest, or even junk food, no it seems legit.

However all of these meals contain a whole lot of:

Carbohydrates – and you know what a…freaking…lot of Carbohydrates!

But hey that is what the USDA recommends – Right?

Here is what they want you to eat:

Please bear with me here, I want to show you what happens in your body if we consume so many carbs – trust me it’s easy and fast so – here we go…

Back to the carbohydrates-

When we consume carbohydrates our bodies digest them and breaks them down into glucose.

Now the glucose will be stored in our Liver which can take 100g & our muscles which can take 500g, however if the liver & muscle have reached capacity & they cannot take anymore glucose – the excess glucose needs to be stored somewhere. So let’s see what happens.

Back to our blood stream, the little blue particles represent the glucose. Now let’s say you liver is filled to the brim with glucose, the next stop will be our muscle cells. As soon as glucose enters your blood stream the pancreas will secrete insulin (the white particles).

In simplistic terms insulin is like a key, it opens the cell (muscle cell) and lets in the glucose. Now after a while all the muscle cells are filled to capacity – but there is still glucose which needs to be parked somewhere.

Now all the excess glucose will be taken to your liver and transformed into Triglycerides.

Triglycerides = Fat

Now the fat will be taken to your fat cells and then stored as fat.

Fat Cells-01Remember that this will happen with every meal, because the meals all include carbohydrates (a lot of carbohydrates)

There is practically no limit on how many carbs your body can store as fat.

To recap quickly:

Now that you know how fat is stored & why we gain weight, What can You do to burn Fat?

Insulin

Insulin = Fat Storing Hormone

What you have to do to keep your insulin down is:

  • You have to cut your carbohydrates
  • Fat is insulin neutral
  • Moderate protein will not affect your insulin

You have to get your ratios of macronutrients right

Remember, when insulin is elevated (due to eating carbs) it will switch off fat release. If insulin stays elevated for more than 90 minutes, it triggers a hormone in your gut called ghrelin that triggers hunger. Whatever you eat that elevates your blood sugar levels also elevates insulin.

Blood sugar goes up, insulin goes up. Blood sugar stabilises. Insulin stays elevated and now needs something to do…Guess what? You’re HUNGRY again.

Simply stay away from foods that elevate your insulin aka Carbohydrates.

Your body has 2 main fuel sources:

  • Fat
  • Stored sugar

If there is no stored sugar what will your body use as fuel?

Yes you guessed it, it will tap into your fat reserves and burn your body fat*. THAT is EXACTLY what we want.

So reduce your macronutrient Carbohydrate and you will be on your way to fat burning.
